COURSE DESCRIPTION: Catalog Course Description: Extension of fluid mechanics in MAE 101A-B to viscous, heat-conducting flows. Application of the energy conservation equation to heat transfer in ducts and external boundary layers. Heat conduction and radiation transfer. Heat transfer coefficients in forced and free convection. Design applications. Prerequisite: admission to an engineering major and grade of C– or better in MAE 101A-B.

TEXTBOOK: Incropera, De Witt, Bergman & Lavine, “Introduction to Heat Transfer”, 5th Edition.

EXAM SCHEDULE: Midterm Exam: TBA. Final Exam: Wed July 30th, 5:00-7:50pm, CENTR 212. All exams are open notes and open book (textbook only). Bring blue books and calculator.

GRADING POLICY: Midterm exam (25%) + Final Exam (45%) + Homeworks (20%) + Design Project (10%).

REGRADING POLICY: submit a written statement detailing the justification for the re-grade to the Professor, indicating on statement: your name, date, email address and justification.

HOMEWORKS: Homework will be assigned each week and collected on Wednesdays at the beginning of the lecture. No late homeworks will be accepted. Homework solutions must be clean, clear and neatly written. Practice problems and their solutions will be weekly posted below before the corresponding hwk due date.

DESIGN PROBLEM: A design problem, which might be open-ended, will be assigned at the beginning of the course. It will be due at the beginning of the last lecture. The design problem statement can be found here.
