MAE 294c. Methods in Applied Mechanics III

Spring 2008

This course is devoted to partial differential equations and their applications in science and engineering. The covered topics include: classification of second order equations; their solutions by methods of characteristics, integral transformations, Green's functions, and images; and similarity solutions. Application of these methods are made to both first-order equations, and second-order equations, such as the wave equation, the diffusion equation and Laplace's equation. Applications include continuum mechanics, potential fields, and transport phenomena such as diffusion, linear and nonlinear waves, Burgers equation and shocks.
