Lecture Notes
Collection of slides in PDF.
They will be updated gradually through the quarter.
I anticipate only minor changes.
- Syllabus for 124A
- From BFDs to PFDs and P&IDs
- Flow diagram notes --
essentially the table of contents in TBWS
- Writing and oral communications,
and a bit on team work
- TBWS process synthesis,
intro, and on tracing chemicals...
- Process synthesis, and
the equations skipped by TBWS
- Heuristics
- Flowsheeting systems
- Optimization: what we'll do,
and what we'll skip
- Heat integration
- Reactors
- Safety and supplementary notes
Reference: AIChE/CCPS Industrial Safety Supplement
And some real life neat stuff:
- BP 2005 Fire Video (18 MB)
made by the CSB
(They have a nice collection of video analyses and reports.)
And
a speech by the BP VP, and
fallout a year later: Reuters, 60 Minutes
The CSB released their final report on March 20, 2007,
available on their site.
- An investigation
report on a storage tank explosion in England
- A pneumatic "rocket"
- Ethics
- The economics package
- All notes, spreadsheets and problem solutions are located on
the design support page.
See link below.
- And a reminder: review the examples in the text too,
esp. the ones on DCFROR.
AIChE Design Contest
Statement
- Please get a copy from my office
- Support material
- No such need for this year's project
Additional Help Files
All the notes and help files are coming from the chemelab server.
See the main entries at the top of the page.
Knovel: Very shifty links especially
after the S&E Library
re-did the design in 2007, so we've given up even with a hint.
Try look for things described as electronic references or the like.
The CCPS Safety Supplement is available among the Knovel
electronic collection of references,
available to UCSD since fall 2006.
In addition to the CCPS Supplement, you can find an amazing array of
handbooks and references. In short order, check
All Titles -> Chemistry & Chemical Engineering.
In addition to the CCPS Supplement link, check also the Industrial Safety
category.
Furthermore, check
All Titles -> Chemistry & Chemical Engineering -> General References.
In there you can find among many others,
Lange's, Perry's with online graphic tools,
critical tables, and DIPPR.
DIPPER is also listed under the Knovel Databases category.
But if you need the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology,
you have to go back to the S&E Library and find it among things like
electronic references.
Yes, this is so much more than resources from NIST. Back in CENG 100,
if you may remember, there is the
Chemistry WebBook plus
other pages from NIST.
Take your time to explore Knovel. Things are not always placed where you
expect. For example, the steam tables are listed under
Physical Chemistry -> Transport Processes.
The first time you go there, it's worth reading the "Explore Library Features"
page.
